Here you will find lots of information and photographs of what our class has been up to!

The website will be updated fortnightly.

 

Please note that during the Autumn Term, PE wil take place on a Tuesday and Friday afternoon. Please ensure your child has their PE kit with them on these days. It is school policy for the children to keep PE kits in school for the whole half term as timetables can change occasionally.

 

12th Feb 2020: Mr Whitehead apologises for the lack of content this half term. I have had iPad issues meaning I couldn’t get the photos up! I have lots of photos on my iPad ready to upload and will be doing this over the next few days!

Wednesday 18th March

 

Today we have had an action packed day. We have been on our new internet based reading site called reading eggs and we loved it! We then had an Eco workshop in the afternoon and learnt all about food miles, Earthships, where our food comes from and even planted our own broad beans to take home to look after!

Monday 16th March

 

Today we have been our Bramhall Hall trip to further our learning about the Tudors. We had a fantastic day looking at the structure of the house, learning about Wattle and Daub (including making our own),Tudor clothes, what they eat and how they lived. We even learnt to dance like Tudors!

Week Commencing 9th March

 

This week is World Book Week and we’ve had such a busy week! We’ve been visited by a couple of different authors and had workshops and we all dressed up as characters from our favourite books. Can you guess our characters from our photo?

Friday 28th February

 

This afternoon we have been very lucky to have an art workshop! We worked hard to create a Tudor rose 3D collage. We each created a small Tudor design out of clay which we stuck onto a Tudor Rose and they looked fantastic!

Thursday 27th February

 

Today we have been doing guided reading, reading our fantastic book The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo. We have been hot seating where we took it in turns to sit on the hot seat and pretend to be a character from the book. The class then asked us questions. There were som amazing questions and some even better answers and acting.

Friday 14th February

 

Today we have had our STEAM day. This term’s project is a Global Goal, which are goals for our world to make it a fair and just place for all. We have focused on designing sustainable housing which could be built cheaply for those in need. We also learnt ow to draw buildings from a single perspective point and our drawings are fantastic!

Today we have been using Purple Mash as part of internet’s safety week! We made posters and did quizzes to find out all about internet safety!

Monday 10th February

 

Today we have been looking at whether Henry VIII was a good or bad king and thinking about the qualities that makes a good king. We created vibrant poster with lots of information we researched.

Wednesday 5th February

 

Today we have written voice overs for the silent film we have been watching. Later in the week, we will record these over their top. There was some great description in our work.

Tuesday 4th February

 

We have been practising writing sentences focusing on using senses, parenthesis, subordinate clauses and relative clauses and wow we did well! Here is just a small selection of our amazing sentences!

Monday 3rd February

 

We’ve been painting today! We’ve finished our Tudor portraits by painting them in water colour and they have turned out fantastically! Mr Whitehead has proudly displayed them in the classroom.

Thursday 30th January

 

Today in science we have been looking at conductors and insulators again. However this time, we have focused on electrical conductivity. We set up an experiment using an electrical circuit and tested whether a variety of materials were conductors or insulators and, if they were conductors, we made a judgement on their electrical resistance.

Monday 27th January

 

Today we have been drawing Tudor portraits. We learnt all about proportion and discovered that we have many talented artists in our class!

Thursday 23rd January

 

This term’s homework project is to create a working lunchbox that will keep our lunch hot or cold. Today in science we learnt all about thermal conductors and insulators and tested a variety of materials to investigate which materials are the best insulators. We will be able to use this information to create our lunch boxes!

Monday 20th January

 

This afternoon, in Topic, we have been looking at Henry VIII and his six wives. We created powerpoints with lots of details about each of his wives.

This week we have been looking at play scripts and have written our own. Today, the sun was shining so we took the opportunity to do some acting outside!

Thursday 9th January

 

TOday we have been looking at properties of materials. We choose a variety of materials and tests their properties such as hardness, flexibility and magnetism.

Monday 6th January

 

Today is the first day of our new topic: The Changing of the Monarchy. We have been looking at what the monarchy is and the different Kings and Queens that have ruled our country. We then created a timeline!

Friday 20th December

 

Today is our STEAM project day! Linked to our Science Topic, we have been researching, designing and making a Space Rover that is fit for travel on Mars.

 

First we researched what is available already. Then, we thought about our own designs before making them. We used a new computer program to design a net for the body of our rover which we will then place on top of the chassis.

 

We learnt how to saw, to score, to use glue guns and axles!

Today we have been playing games in maths to practice lots of different skills. Who knew you could learn so much maths from a game!

Today we have been doing Topic and focusing on art again; this time aboriginal!

Today is Christmas jumper day!

 

Mr Whitehead has been on a maths course recently and as homework he has been trialing some maths games in the class. The games focused on addition and subtraction but also required us to do some problem solving and work strategically! We had such fun!

Thursday 12th December

 

With the Christmas fair on Monday, today we have been doing Christmas crafts which we can sell at the Christmas fair.

Just like Santa’s little Elves, we have been hard at work creating Christmas Tree decorations to sell at the fair!

Monday 2nd December

 

Today we have been looking at Pop Art and the work of Andy Warhol. We used the computer to print out our own and coloured them in his signature style!

Thursday 28th November

 

Today we have been thinking about the planets and their relative sizes. We made planets out of plastercine and tried to make them as accurate as possible!

Monday 25th November

 

Today we have been looking at Captain Robert Falcon Scott in Topic and created fact file posters about him and his expedition. They turned out amazingly and we worked so hard on them this lesson. Every group worked really well as a team and Mr Whitehead was really proud!

Wednesday 20th November

 

Today we have been looking at Tesselations in Computing. First we searched the school to find examples of tesselations before we treated our own on the computers!

Monday 18th November

 

Today we have been looking at realism and impressionism as part of our Topic. We stuck half of this famous Monet painting into our books and completed the second half in his style of painting.

Thursday 14th November

 

Today in Science, we have been learning about how our Solar System is arranged. We looked at all the previous theories of geocentricism and heliocentrism. We used SeeSaw to record a brief explanation of the planetary models. Can you remember which we currently believe?

Tuesday 13th November

 

This week is Anti-bullying week. Today we have been doing role plays to get us thinking about how bullying affects people and what we can do to help those who are being bullied. We are going to vote for our favourite to show in assembly on Friday!

Wednesday 6th November

 

Today we have been getting festive! This afternoon, we have been making our Christmas Cards! If you would like to purchase your children’s card, please fill in the form and get your child to bring the form and their design back to school by 11th November.

Tuesday 5th November

 

This morning we have been to Wellington Secondary School to take part in their apprentice challenge. We had to build various products to sell and buy parts to build more in order to maximise our profit. We had to work hard on our strategy and show good teamwork skills and it turns out we have a few entrepreneurial spirits in our midst!

Today we have been learning all about the planets in our new science topic, Earth and Space.

Monday 4th November

 

Today we have been learning the alphabet in French and learning all about accented letters. We recorded ourselves having short French conversations. We asked each other our names and the how to spell our names. Tres bien!

Wednesday 30th October

 

We have had an amazing day today for music day! As it is also Black History month, we have spent today looking at famous black people, from singers, to activists to presidents!

 

This afternoon we had a workshop with a Gospel choir and learnt some singing techniques. It was so uplifting and we loved it!

Thursday 17th October

 

It’s building day! We learnt how to safely use craft knives and glue guns and came out with some great products!

Wednesday 16th October

 

This afternoon, year 5 have all been together in the hall to design products for our first, half-termly STEAM project. This half term we are focusing on global goals and particularly reusing household materials that are not recyclable and turning them into new products with a different function. We had some great designs, bring on the making tomorrow!

Thursday 10th October

 

Today we have been investigating the affects of friction of friction. We used a Newton meter to slowly drag a shoe across a variety of surface.

Wednesday 9th October

 

This week the whole school has been to St Peter’s church in Hale to learn about Harvest. We had a great time! We learnt about baking bread, made thumb pots, learnt to knit, planted spinach and even pressed our own apple juice! Delicious!

Wednesday 2nd October

 

This afternoon we have been looking at water resistance in science. We designed boats that were streamlined so that we could race them across water. Unfortunately, most of our boats sunk! We took this is our stride and learnt a valuable lesson about buoyancy and surface area.

Wednesday 2nd October

 

Today the whole of year 5 went to visit the local Mosque. We learnt all about the religion of Islam and how Muslims worship and even learnt to write our names in Arabic​​​​​.​​

Wednesday 25th September

 

Today in Topic we have learnt about the traditional method of weaving Kente cloth used in Ghana and have had a go at our own weaving!

Monday 23rd September

 

We have been extremely lucky to have a Lego robotics workshop today! First we built our robots, then we learnt how to code them so that they would move around the room. They had an infrared sensor which we coded so that the robot would turn if it got to close to something. How cool!

Today we have been looking at long distance communication again. This time, morse code. It was much easier than the semaphore!

This afternoon we have been doing science. We made parachutes to help us understand how air resistance works.

We’ve been looking at the artwork of Ancient Benin. It turns out that we have some seriously talented artists in our class!

Thursday 12th September

 

This morning, we have been performing again! We have been looking at the poem Talking Turkeys by Benjamin Zephaniah and we took it in turns to perform a verse in pairs.

 

This afternoon we have been learning about semaphore in computing. We tried to send messages across the playground, but it was veery difficult to decipher!

Wednesday 11th September

 

Today we have been tackling the confusing subject of Weight and Mass! We learnt how mass remains constant, but that weight changes based on gravitational pull! We measured the weight and mass of lost of different classroom items!
