Stamford Park Junior School

4JW

Welcome to 4JW

Wednesday 4th March

To celebrate the end of our Ancient Egyptians topic we had a visitor in school who delivered an art workshop. We used wool to create our own felt and then created the eye of Horus. We had to use lots of water and soap to bond the fibbed together which made it a very messy job!

Tuesday 3rd March - Cats Protection

Cats Protection is a charity which helps cats and makes sure they are well looked after. Today we had a representative from the charity who came into school to teach us about what a cat needs, how to keep cats safe and how we know when a cat wants to say hello and when it wants to be left alone. We then worked in pairs to complete a quiz about what we have learnt.

Tuesday 11th February - Safer Internet Day

This week the children have been learning about how to stay safe online. They had an assembly, completed an internet safety quiz, conducted a survey on what the children know about internet safety and had a chat about what information we are OK to share and what information should be kept private. We also discussed what to do if we saw something inappropriate online.

The children have the option to enter a competition where they design a poster about internet safety. Templates for this have been given to the children and they will be shared with the rest of the school on Friday.

Tuesday 5th February - Mummification

In our topic this half term, we are learning all about how the ancient Egyptians shaped the world. Today we focussed on their beliefs and why they mummified bodies once they’d died. To help us remember the process of preserving a body, we had a go ourselves! Unfortunately, we couldn’t use real bodies so we had to settle for oranges. We then wrote instructions about how we did it.

Childrens’ Mental Health Awareness Week - 3rd - 9th February

To raise awareness to the importance of mental health, we are doing daily activities linked to improving our own mental health and wellbeing.

Monday - At the end of the day we will be discussing what we admire about some of our classmates.

Tuesday - We will be having a visit from a yoga instructor who will do an assembly about the benefits of yoga. We will also be spending some time listening to relaxing music and doing some mindfulness colouring. At the end of the day we will talk about things we are grateful for.

Wednesday - We will be spending some time thinking about and sharing our favourite memories.

Thursday - We will be thinking about things that have happened this year which we have really enjoyed.

Friday - Today we will be finishing the week off with a yoga lesson where we can sit and relax and focus on our breathing. We will also spend some time practising our listening skills before ending the day telling jokes and trying to make each other laugh.

Well done to all of the children for exceptional behaviour and an amazing performance! I couldn’t be more proud.

Thank you to all of the parents who supported us - whether it was by coming to watch, buying the t-shirts, practising the songs with the children or coming out late at night to pick them up.

Please practice :).

Wednesday 30th October - Black History Month

Today we had a visit from ‘Gospel Touch Choir’ and learnt about inspirational black British people who have done amazing things in history. The day started with an assembly where the choir sang for us, we then watched videos and read information texts about people such as Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Mary Seacole and many more. We thought about how they may have felt, how they changed history and why we should remember them. In the afternoon, we looked at black musicians and listened to some of their work. We thought about the message they were trying to portray, the instruments they used and what we liked about the music.

Here are some pictures of our workshop.

Friday 18th October - STEAM project

Our topic this half term is the rainforest. To bring our topic to an end we have done a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) project. We started by researching endangered animals, thinking about what dangers they face and then designing and creating a habitat which would protect them. Here are some photos of us creating them.

Tuesday 24th September - Jigsaw

Today was our first PSHE lesson of Year 4. We are now teaching PSHE through a scheme of work called ‘Jigsaw’. In this lesson we focussed on recognising similarities and differences in our class and working together as a team. For one of the activities we worked in teams to choose 9 words which describe good team work. We then ordered them from most important to least important using a diamond formation. Below is our ideas.

Thursday 19th September - Identifying and labelling invertebrates

This half term our science topic is ‘Animals including humans’. We have been looking at different ways you can sort animals, what types of animals there are and how you can use a classification key to identify animals. Today we focussed on invertebrates. We searched for them around school and drew the ones we found. Here are some pictures of our search.

Harvest Festival

The Year Four classes will be delivering an assembly which focusses on what a harvest festival is and why we celebrate the harvest. During this assembly we will be singing three songs. It would be really helpful if you could practise these with your child.

The songs are:

Food Glorious Food
